Read on for our favourite free, open source browsers. It certainly isn’t something that a small company without any IT staff could or should set up. It is so frustrating when you need to get some work done quickly but the computer restarts automatically to update which could take a long time depending on the update. You also have Group Policy editor on Pro You can trim down Windows updates even more.
I have it set to Notify me only and notfiy me to download. So, if a update comes up when I am doing something and skip it for now Also set no reboot with user logged on. I may be mistaken, but restart after updates is being scheduled for 3 o’clock in the morning. Why everybody feels the need to update directly is beyond me.
Also, there are a couple of tools like ShutUp They have active hours and they will be further expanding active hours. Honestly, updates don’t take that long especially if you have a SSD, but I know not everyone does. I understand putting updates off and I’m guilty of it as well, but it’s ultimately better to patch the computer.
Plus when you put updates off for long enough, it does tell you when it will actually restart the computer to install. I get it can be annoying sometimes, but I personally don’t think it’s that big of a deal at the end of the day. For a home user: – domain not needed. Homegroup and network sharing should be enough. In need there are open source encryption tools VeraCrypt, KeePass, depending on needs.
I see no need to buy a Pro license for a home user, especially when some technologies that might interest a typical user, can be replaced with free alternatives. I was with you until you kind of contradict yourself: “For a home user For a ‘Home’ user, apps from the Store are much safer than x86 super spammed programs! You might wanna read the article first.
Apps in the store does not mean access to apps in the windows store. All versions of Windows 10 have that. It’s your own private section that you can use to develop and “publish” apps too. I agree for the most part, but deferring Windows Updates is a worthwhile Pro feature. I know many people that don’t upgrade right away just in case there are issues. Active hours are extended too! TeamViewer is my favorite for maintenance but for those working in applications from home, Remote Desktop is a far better experience.
I guess you don’t encrypt your phone and data as well then? Simple answer, no its not worth it. I wish I could by Windows 10 Enterprise, thats worth it, but they dont sell it to individuals. You should know anything is not free! How hard is it to give a “Manual” option? These updates dont even care what i am doing, it just starts downloading automatically and slows my internet speed from browsing internet!
Emi you’re about as stupid as they get. You should get your head out of your ass and realize that windows 10 uses so much data against our will because of stupid things like not being able to turn off automatic updates. But we all know you’re mentally handicapped and won’t be able to comprehend anything we tell you.
Yeah Windows takes up too much data. This was posted in a pineapple under the sea. If you do not run an Insider build the amount of updates you get to install are not more than they were before. They are only a lot bigger. And that is to solve the oldest windows update complaint that they are eating your disk space.
Now you get the base windows 10 and the latest CU on your disk. In the past you got all updates since the latest CU and thats a lot for windows 7 till very recently. Windows 8 would fill a small storage tablet with just updates sitting there. So its a trade of between two bad or you stop doing updates, and personally I feel that thats the worst option.
Sorry I feel updates ruin my computer more than help it. Why worry about it being secure when there are golden keys. Performance wise windows 8 with updates off worked faster and better. I just shut off the Windows Update service.
Turn it on when I feel like updating or getting something from the Windows Store. Work computer I can understand but not my home computer. The other reason is that some people are still on a naf ADSL system. Some of those I sure uses ethernet, in fact one lot i know that have limited broadband do use Ethernet as i set up the connection myself. I understand your perspective because I used to think like that as they always offered unlimited internet around here , but one day something happened to me.
My wireless router broke. And nothing else worked. And I had important stuff to do. And I had to wait 2 days for repair and everything. Apparently it was so bad they had to rewire everything.
I had to use the mobile hotspot on my phone. I only had a few gigs available. So I needed data savings. This was back with Windows 7, but this data-saving feature is very helpful to some people now. In windows 10 now the mobile hotspots are detected as being metered connections at least the one my Lumia creates so this particular example is now not an problem anymore. Not trying to reduce the feedback though cause the point sticks, data-saving is helpful in certain scenario’s.
Just trying to avoid people thinking this happens with their hotspot also :. Yes, but I’ve had to use my mobile hotspot with a bridge connected to a router, so that I can be on the internet and print at the same time. The bridge logs into my mobile hotspot and gives access to it to the router on the router’s WAN port.
Gives wireless and wired access throughout the house from a mobile hotspot. It also allows me to access the NAS for additional files I may need, and my wife and I can access each other’s computers. This would have saved me a lot. Looks like I’ll be able to go back to using that now. It’s such a pain having to disconnect from the internet, connect directly to the printer wireless , then print, then reconnect to the internet. Real pain. My dad lives in a fairly rural area in Oklahoma where there aren’t a lot of people so there aren’t any great broadband options.
His best option is satellite service HughesNet which is what he uses. His access comes in through a cable modem attached to a router. His primary PC is plugged directly into the router via an Ethernet connection. However, he is limited to MB bandwidth per day he gets charged extra if he goes over the limit.
As an example, I helped him install Windows 10 on one of his “extra” computers from the most recent at the time ISO that I had pulled down from my house where I have decent broadband. On a side note, I’ve considered building a utility that would allow him to schedule the automatic Windows Update downloads since he has window during the night around – where he can download as much as his current speed allows. I designed a prototype but haven’t fully worked through the final tool yet.
I suppose I’ve procrastenated a bit because I was secretly hoping Microsoft would see the light and add scheduled downloads as a feature. However, I think I probably shouldn’t be holding my breath You can use the amazing tool Networx. It does exactly what you want. Although you’ll have a lot of fun building the project yourself.
No need to be unpleasent just because someone is not as privileged as you. Actually, there are a variety of situations where it makes sense. Though he admitted he is, and that the speed slowdown in the biggest problem, there are a variety of other possible situations, too.
The most likely alternate scenario would probably be USB tethering. Generally, such a connection will show up on the PC as a virtual wired ethernet interface. Such ‘virtual’ ethernet connections aren’t the only possibility, either. Consider 4G routers, such as this one. Note the ethernet ports in the back, clearly enabling the use of normal ethernet to connect to a metered cellular connection.
Further, I think it’s worth pointing out that cellular connections aren’t the only type of connection that can be metered.
More and more home ISPs are rolling out caps on their connections, for example. There’s also stuff like BGAN satellite terminals, which are extremely expensive bandwidth-wise: we’re talking cents per kilobyte. Can you imagine how outrageous the bill would be if your Windows machine started downloading updates automatically over such a connection? Simply updating the live tiles would probably incur a signifigant charge alone.
And just for the record, I find it rather astounding that you accuse OP of thinking the world revolves around them. He clearly wasn’t using “we” to refer to literally everyone , and a simple Google search shows he’s far from the only person with this problem.
Get over small-minded self. Whenever I travel I use a mobile hotspot. I am always afraid of huge Windows updates happening while I am on the hotspot as it has only a few gb per month. I would really like to be able to flag that particular connection as metered. Here’s the thing. But there is no option for properties there only “forget” therefore I cant set even wifi to metered : it used to be there but now it’s just not.
So it sucks. And now I moved to uzbekistan with data cap 13gb per month I really miss it back in Malaysia where I wouldn’t ever care about this option.
Windows 10 is a major release of Microsoft ‘s Windows NT operating system. It is the direct successor to Windows 8. It was released to manufacturing on July 15, , and later to retail on July 29, Windows 10 receives new builds on an ongoing basis, which are available at no additional cost to users, in addition to additional test builds of Windows 10, which are available to Windows Insiders.
Devices in enterprise environments can receive these updates at a slower pace, or use long-term support milestones that only receive critical updates, such as security patches , over their ten-year lifespan of extended support. Windows 10 received generally positive reviews upon its original release. Critics praised Microsoft’s decision to provide the desktop-oriented interface in line with previous versions of Windows, contrasting the tablet-oriented approach of Windows 8, although Windows 10’s touch-oriented user interface mode was criticized for containing regressions upon the touch-oriented interface of its predecessor.
Critics also praised the improvements to Windows 10’s bundled software over Windows 8. However, media outlets have been critical of the changes to operating system behaviors, including mandatory update installation, privacy concerns over data collection performed by the OS for Microsoft and its partners, and adware -like tactics used to promote the operating system on its release. Microsoft initially aimed to have Windows 10 installed on over one billion devices within three years of its release; [19] that goal was ultimately reached almost five years after release on March 16, On June 24, , Microsoft announced Windows 10’s successor, Windows 11 , which was released on October 5, In December , technology writer Mary Jo Foley reported that Microsoft was working on an update to Windows 8 codenamed “Threshold”, after a planet in its Halo franchise.
She also stated that one of the goals for Threshold was to create a unified application platform and development toolkit for Windows, Windows Phone and Xbox One which all use a similar kernel based on Windows NT. The new Start menu takes after Windows 7 ‘s design by using only a portion of the screen and including a Windows 7-style application listing in the first column.
The second column displays Windows 8-style app tiles. Myerson said that these changes would occur in a future update, but did not elaborate. Windows Phone 8. Screenshots of a Windows build purported to be Threshold were leaked in July , showing the previously presented Start menu and windowed Windows Store apps, [32] followed by a further screenshot of a build identifying itself as “Windows Technical Preview”, numbered , in September , showing a new virtual desktop system, a notification center, and a new File Explorer icon.
On September 30, , Microsoft officially announced that Threshold would be unveiled during a media event as Windows Myerson said that Windows 10 would be Microsoft’s “most comprehensive platform ever”, providing a single, unified platform for desktop and laptop computers, tablets , smartphones, and all-in-one devices. In regards to Microsoft naming the new operating system Windows 10 instead of Windows 9, Terry Myerson said that “based on the product that’s coming, and just how different our approach will be overall, it wouldn’t be right to call it Windows 9.
We’re trying to create one platform, one eco-system that unites as many of the devices from the small embedded Internet of Things, through tablets, through phones, through PCs and, ultimately, into the Xbox. Further details surrounding Windows 10’s consumer-oriented features were presented during another media event held on January 21, , entitled “Windows The Next Chapter”.
Additional developer-oriented details surrounding the ” Universal Windows Platform ” concept were revealed and discussed during Microsoft’s Build developers’ conference. Among them were the unveiling of “Islandwood”, which provides a middleware toolchain for compiling Objective-C -based software particularly iOS to run as universal apps on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile.
A port of Candy Crush Saga made using the toolkit, which shared much of its code with the iOS version, was demonstrated, alongside the announcement that the King -developed game would be bundled with Windows 10 at launch.
At the Ignite conference , Microsoft employee Jerry Nixon stated that Windows 10 would be the “last version of Windows”, a statement that Microsoft confirmed was “reflective” of its view of the operating system being a “service” with new versions and updates to be released over time.
On June 1, , Microsoft announced that Windows 10 would be released on July 29, The commercials focused on the tagline “A more human way to do”, emphasizing new features and technologies supported by Windows 10 that sought to provide a more “personal” experience to users. Windows 10 makes its user experience and functionality more consistent between different classes of device and addresses most of the shortcomings in the user interface that were introduced in Windows 8.
Windows 10 supports universal apps , an expansion of the Metro-style first introduced in Windows 8. Windows 10 also introduced the Microsoft Edge web browser , a virtual desktop system, a window and desktop management feature called Task View , support for fingerprint and face recognition login, new security features for enterprise environments, and DirectX Windows apps share code across platforms, have responsive designs that adapt to the needs of the device and available inputs, can synchronize data between Windows 10 devices including notifications, credentials, and allowing cross-platform multiplayer for games , and are distributed through the Microsoft Store rebranded from Windows Store since September The ARM version of Windows 10 allows running applications for x86 processors through bit software emulation.
On Windows 10, Microsoft Store serves as a unified storefront for apps, video content, and eBooks. Desktop software distributed through Windows Store is packaged using the App-V system to allow sandboxing. A new iteration of the Start menu is used on the Windows 10 desktop, with a list of places and other options on the left side, and tiles representing applications on the right. The menu can be resized, and expanded into a full-screen display, which is the default option in Tablet mode.
When a window is snapped to one side of the screen, Task View appears and the user is prompted to choose a second window to fill the unused side of the screen called “Snap Assist”. Charms have been removed; their functionality in universal apps is accessed from an App commands menu on their title bar. It is accessed by clicking an icon in the notification area, or dragging from the right of the screen. Notifications can be synced between multiple devices.
Windows 10 is designed to adapt its user interface based on the type of device being used and available input methods. It offers two separate user interface modes: a user interface optimized for mouse and keyboard, and a “Tablet mode” designed for touchscreens.
Users can toggle between these two modes at any time, and Windows can prompt or automatically switch when certain events occur, such as disabling Tablet mode on a tablet if a keyboard or mouse is plugged in, or when a 2-in-1 PC is switched to its laptop state. In Tablet mode, programs default to a maximized view, and the taskbar contains a back button and hides buttons for opened or pinned programs by default; Task View is used instead to switch between programs.
The full screen Start menu is used in this mode, similarly to Windows 8, but scrolls vertically instead of horizontally. Windows 10 incorporates multi-factor authentication technology based upon standards developed by the FIDO Alliance.
Devices with supported cameras requiring infrared illumination, such as Intel RealSense allow users to log in with iris or face recognition , similarly to Kinect.
Devices with supported readers allow users to log in through fingerprint recognition. Support was also added for palm-vein scanning through a partnership with Fujitsu in February In , researchers demonstrated that Windows Hello could be bypassed on fully-updated Windows 10 version with a color printout of a person’s picture taken with an IR camera.
However, a PIN is not a simpler password. While passwords are transmitted to domain controllers , PINs are not. They are tied to one device, and if compromised, only one device is affected.
As such, the authentication token transmitted to the server is harder to crack. In addition, whereas weak passwords may be broken via rainbow tables , TPM causes the much-simpler Windows PINs to be resilient to brute-force attacks.
When Windows 10 was first introduced, multi-factor authentication was provided by two components: Windows Hello and Passport not to be confused with the Passport platform of Later, Passport was merged into Windows Hello. Device Guard is designed to protect against zero-day exploits , and runs inside a hypervisor so that its operation remains separated from the operating system itself. Other features such as word wrap and transparency were also added.
These functions can be disabled to revert to the legacy console if needed. The Anniversary Update added Windows Subsystem for Linux WSL , which allows the installation of a user space environment from a supported Linux distribution that runs natively on Windows. The subsystem translates Linux system calls to those of the Windows NT kernel only claims full system call compatibility as of WSL 2, included in a later Windows update.
The environment can execute the Bash shell and bit command-line programs WSL 2 also supports bit Linux programs and graphics, assuming supporting software installed, [88] and GPUs support for other uses [89]. Windows applications cannot be executed from the Linux environment, and vice versa. To reduce the storage footprint of the operating system, Windows 10 automatically compresses system files.
The system can reduce the storage footprint of Windows by approximately 1. The level of compression used is dependent on a performance assessment performed during installations or by OEMs , which tests how much compression can be used without harming operating system performance.
Furthermore, the Refresh and Reset functions use runtime system files instead, making a separate recovery partition redundant, allowing patches and updates to remain installed following the operation, and further reducing the amount of space required for Windows 10 by up to 12 GB.

Retrieved August 6, Update April 24 Starting with the Windows 10 Creators Update, it’s possible to quickly set an Ethernet connection as metered using the Settings app. Windows 10 is an operating system designed to take full advantage of an internet connection without any restrictions on how much bandwidth it uses to perform tasks, such as download drivers and updates, sync settings, connect with cloud services, let you get access to the World Wide Web, and everything else.
While this isn’t a problem for many users, not everyone has an unlimited data plan to access the internet. Many users connect to the World Wide Web through metered internet connection plans, which most of the time have a limit on the amount of data they can send and receive.
If you have a metered internet connection, setting your network connection as metered within Windows 10 will help to reduce the amount of data you’re allowed to use in a given month. The problem is that the operating system only offers this option for Wi-Fi or cellular data connections, and it appears that Microsoft assumes that anyone connected to a network using an Ethernet connection has unlimited access to the internet.
However, if you know your way around the registry, you can still set an Ethernet connection as metered to reduce the internet data usage. In this Windows 10 guide, we’ll walk you through the steps to set your wired network connection as metered by modifying the registry. Important: Before you make any changes, make sure to understand that you’ll be modifying the Windows registry, which could be a dangerous game that can cause irreversible damage to your computer when changes are not done properly.
It’s recommended that you do a full backup of your system before proceeding. You’ve been warned! Once you set a metered connection, the operating system will stop using the internet in many ways. For example:. In the case you want to revert to the original settings, using the same instructions mentioned above, make sure to change the Ethernet key data value from 2 to 1.
If you want to verify your Ethernet connection is set to metered, you can use apps, such as the desktop version of Outlook, which will detect and alert you that you are using a metered connection, as you probably won’t see any “Metered network” statics on the App history tab in Task Manager. Obviously, you should also notice a reduced amount of data usage at the end of the month on your internet connection plan. While this is a handy workaround to help you to control the data usage of the operating system, remember you will still need to control how much data you personally use to browse the web, watch videos, and everything else to not go over your data cap.

Most consumers buying or building a Windows 10 PC will be coming across either the “Home” or “Pro” versions of the operating system. Many might not notice, nor care which they’re on so long as it’s Windows 10 and it does whatever they want it to do. For some, however, Windows 10 Pro will be a must have, and if it doesn’t come with the PC you buy you’ll be looking to upgrade, at a cost. The first thing to consider is the price.
For most average consumers, Windows 10 Home is everything you’ll ever need and you shouldn’t waste your money on a Pro upgrade. Pro is marketed more towards the business crowd without being on the scale of a full enterprise rollout, or even for education in some instances.
Some of the key features of Pro:. You can find out more at Microsoft opens in new tab , but those are the headline features.
Upgrade from Home to Pro costs around dollars. I needed that for Hyper-V. I do need some domain resources so it’s usefull for me at home. On home, it’s mostly registry settings for everything and can be a pain to hunt down if you dont know what your looking for. Who ever down voted me is a cluless moron You really are just a fanboy who has no clue on how it all works With all of the rhetoric of there being ‘One Windows’ I am always annoyed about the difference between Home and Pro versions, and even more annoyed at the cost of Windows in general.
There should be a consumer version of Windows that is essentially what we know as ‘pro’ today with a normal MAK key that is tied to the hardware, and then there should be an enterprise version with KMS keys for doing stuff like network deployments. That should be it, and the only difference between the two should be how it is licensed and deployed.
And the price! The price is insane! Does MS not see what is happening? When I was a kid I could not afford Windows, so I did what every kid in the ’90s did and pirated it, or got a free win95 key from a forum on the internet. There was even one point where I would just let the OS expire after 90 days and reinstall the OS every time because I had far more time than money. But then I grew up and managed a refurbishing company where we purchased and installed windows on a few hundred machines per month.
Now I am in charge of a school network where I manage what is largely a Windows network. And how am I able to do this? Because I had access to ‘free’ copies of the OS when I was a kid cutting my teeth on technology. It is what I grew up knowing, so it is what I am the most comfortable deploying. Kids today don’t have access to free copies of Windows. Kids today are learning how to build hackintoshes or linux boxes because they are free and easy to build. When this gen of kids grows up and manages networks in years they wont care about deploying Windows on the corporate network, because they won’t know how to support it.
By not having a free or affordable version available now, they are loosing the enterprise market tomorrow. And the problem is much bigger than that. It is not Windows that is getting it’s name damaged this way. It is Microsoft itself.
But if you don’t grow up in the MS world, then you don’t care about the MS services and products. Refurbishers pay just a few dollars for a copy of Windows. I love MS They always talk about simplifying their licencing and pricing What do you expect? They are software company first not hardware company first Apple or marketing company first Google. Software are their bread and butter.
Being able to defer Windows Updates is also a nice Pro feature. It’s sort of like ransomware.
